Is Thigh Liposuction Right for Your Presentation?
The thigh carries fat in several distinct zones: the inner (medial) thigh, the outer (lateral) thigh, the front (anterior) thigh, the banana roll just below the buttock crease, and the inner knee. Some patients have one isolated deposit; others have disproportion across the whole thigh. During consultation, I examine each zone separately and plan treatment across all of them where needed, rather than treating one area in isolation.
Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) suits patients whose weight is stable and who have not shifted these deposits with diet and exercise. The other requirement is skin quality. Your skin must have enough recoil to tighten over the new contour after fat is removed. If you have loose thigh skin, particularly after significant weight loss, liposuction alone can make the laxity worse. In that situation the appropriate operation is usually a thighplasty (thigh lift), sometimes combined with liposuction, and I will tell you this plainly at consultation.
A Note on Lipoedema
Some women who believe they have stubborn thigh fat in fact have lipoedema, a chronic condition causing symmetrical, disproportionate fat in the legs that is often tender to pressure and bruises readily, and that typically spares the feet. Lipoedema is assessed and treated differently from cosmetic thigh fat, and liposuction in this setting is a medical procedure with its own considerations. What the Procedure Involves
Thigh liposuction in my practice is performed under general anaesthesia at Maitland Private Hospital, an accredited facility with 24-hour medical cover and an on-site ICU. The operation follows a consistent sequence:
Tumescent infiltration
The treatment zones are infiltrated with fluid containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline, which reduces bleeding and discomfort.
VASER ultrasound stage
A fine ultrasound probe delivers energy that loosens fat cells from the surrounding tissue before any fat is removed. This is the step that distinguishes VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) from standard techniques.
Aspiration
The loosened fat is removed through fine cannulas, working through each planned zone of the thigh in turn.
Incision placement
Access incisions are a few millimetres long.
Compression
A surgical compression garment is fitted in theatre before you wake, to support the tissues as healing begins.

Risks and Recovery
All surgery carries risk, and thigh liposuction is no exception. You should expect swelling and bruising that can take weeks to settle, and the risks include contour irregularity, seroma (fluid collection), infection, altered skin sensation and deep vein thrombosis, a risk I take seriously in leg surgery in particular. The inner thigh also has delicate tissue and superficial lymphatic channels, which is why it demands unhurried, careful technique rather than aggressive fat removal. You will wear a compression garment for four weeks full time, then a further two weeks half time, and most patients return to desk work within one to two weeks with exercise built back gradually. Cost and Medicare
Thigh liposuction performed for cosmetic reasons has no Medicare item number, which means no Medicare or health fund rebate applies and GST is payable on the surgical fee. You will receive a written, itemised quote after your consultation, once I know exactly which thigh zones we are treating. Your steps to surgery
1. GP referral
Ask your GP for a referral to me. A referral is required for all consultations.
2. Consultation
We spend around an hour examining each thigh zone, discussing your goals and deciding whether liposuction, a thighplasty (thigh lift) or a combination suits your presentation.
3. Written quote
You receive an itemised quote covering the surgical fee, hospital, anaesthetist and all follow-up.
4. Prepare for surgery
You complete any required tests, stop smoking if applicable and are fitted for your compression garment.
5. Surgery at Maitland Private Hospital
Your procedure takes place at Maitland Private Hospital.
Recovery and follow-up
You follow a structured review schedule through the first twelve months, with intensive reviews in the first two weeks and appointments at four weeks, three months, six months and twelve months.
