Lipoedema Surgery Cost in Newcastle NSW
There is no single lipoedema operation and no single lipoedema price. Surgery for lipoedema is assembled from procedures already priced on this site: VASER (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) sessions for the abnormal fat, priced by body region, and excisional surgery (lipectomy) where loose skin needs to be removed. Because standalone liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) for lipoedema is staged, one region per session, most patients need more than one session, and the total cost is the sum of the sessions planned for them, plus any excisional operation where clinically indicated.
The funding position is the same for every session. There is no Medicare item number for liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) performed for lipoedema, private health funds do not contribute, and GST applies to all fees. Each session is self-funded in full. Where Each Phase of Lipoedema Surgery Is Priced
Lipoedema surgery has two possible phases, and each is priced on its own page.
The first phase is fat removal. This uses the same VASER (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) sessions priced on the regional cost pages: thighs [2], calves and ankles [3], and arms [4]. Each standalone session treats one region and stays within my per-session aspirate protocol of 2,500 mL, which is why treatment is planned as a series rather than a single operation. Those pages show how a session’s cost is built up, covering the surgical fee, anaesthetist, hospital and GST; for lipoedema, the same build-up applies, but the length of each session, and therefore its cost, is set by the extent of your involvement rather than by a fixed regional figure.
The second phase, which not every patient needs, is excisional surgery (lipectomy) for loose skin that remains after debulking. Depending on the region, this is a thighplasty [5], brachioplasty [6] or abdominoplasty [7], each priced on its own cost page. Where an excisional operation is clinically indicated, liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) of the same region can be performed within that operation without the standalone session cap, because the open operation allows direct control of the tissue. Whether that combination is appropriate is a clinical decision made at consultation, not a packaging choice.
Why Lipoedema Treatment Is Repeated
The single biggest difference between lipoedema surgery costs and a standard liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) quote is repetition.
Lipoedema affects large, continuous regions, most often the thighs, lower legs and, in a proportion of patients, the arms. Removing that volume in a single operation is not how I plan this surgery. I stage treatment: one region per session, each session kept within the 2,500 mL aspirate protocol. Staging keeps each anaesthetic shorter, keeps fluid shifts manageable, and lets each region settle in its compression garment before the next region is treated.
Most patients need between two and four sessions, one region per session, spaced at least three months apart. Patients with limited disease in a single region may need only one session; patients with extensive involvement of thighs, calves and arms sit at the upper end of the range, and some need more. Each session is quoted and billed separately at the figures on its regional cost page, so your total is the per-session figure multiplied by the number of sessions planned for you, and that plan is set at consultation after examination [1].
How Each Session Is Priced: Time in Theatre
The honest way to estimate lipoedema surgery costs is by operating time, not by body region. Regions differ in size and involvement between patients, so the same region can mean a very different session length from one patient to the next. What drives the cost of each session is how long it takes: the anaesthetist bills by the hour, the hospital charges for theatre time and the day’s stay, and my surgical fee is set per session according to the planned operating time.
A typical lipoedema session runs 2.5 to 3 hours. At that length, the surgical fee is $7,500 to $9,000 excluding GST, and the published total per session, covering surgical fee, anaesthetist fee, hospital fee, consumables and GST, is approximately $18,000 to $21,000. A shorter session for limited disease costs less; a longer session for extensive involvement costs more. Anaesthetist and hospital components are approximate until confirmed in your written quote.
Your estimate is therefore the per-session figure multiplied by the number of sessions planned for you. If excisional surgery (lipectomy) is indicated after debulking, that operation is quoted separately on its own cost page and is never bundled into the session pricing.

What Is and Is Not Included
Each session’s surgical fee includes your structured follow-up: intensive reviews through the first 2 weeks after surgery, then reviews at 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. A post-operative compression garment is supplied with each session, worn 4 weeks full time and then 2 weeks part time.
The session figures do not include the ongoing, non-surgical side of lipoedema care. Lipoedema is a chronic condition, and surgery sits within long-term management rather than replacing it. Costs that continue independently of surgery include your usual flat-knit compression garments beyond the supplied post-operative garment, allied health care such as lymphoedema therapy where it forms part of your management, and any conservative measures you maintain between and after sessions. These are billed by their own providers and vary with your individual program.
The initial consultation fee, and the pre-operative tests arranged before your first session, are also separate and are set out in your written quote [1].
Hospital and Stay
Every session is performed at Maitland Private Hospital under general anaesthesia. Most standalone sessions are day surgery: you are admitted, treated and discharged the same day, and the hospital component of your quote reflects theatre time and a day stay. Where a longer session is planned, or where your health or circumstances warrant it, an overnight stay is arranged instead, and the hospital component of that session’s quote increases accordingly. Your written quote states which applies to each session, so there is no ambiguity on the day.

Getting Your Written Quote
Your actual costs are set at consultation, not from this page. At your consultation I examine the affected regions, map the extent of involvement, and set out a session plan: which regions, in what order, how long each session is expected to take, and whether excisional surgery (lipectomy) is likely to be part of your pathway later. A second consultation is included at no cost if you want time to consider your plan, and telehealth review is available for regional patients between visits.
You then receive a written quote itemising each planned session separately: surgical fee, anaesthetist fee, hospital fee, consumables and GST, with day stay or overnight stated per session. Because sessions are quoted individually, you can proceed one session at a time rather than committing to the full series upfront [1].
