Liposuction (Suction Assisted Lipectomy) Cost in Newcastle NSW
There is no single price for liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy). The fee is set by the areas treated, the operating time they need, and whether the operation is a day procedure or an overnight stay. I perform liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) using VASER (ultrasound assisted lipectomy), under general anaesthetic, at Maitland Private Hospital, and for most patients it is a day procedure.
This page covers what goes into a quote, what moves the fee, how 1 session compares with staged sessions, and where lipoedema surgery and fat grafting (autologous fat transfer) sit. Each treatment area has its own cost page with a worked example, linked at the end. For the procedure itself, see the liposuction pillar.

What is in a liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) quote
A written quote from my rooms itemises every component, so the total is the total:
Surgeon fee
The operation and all post-operative reviews: intensive reviews through the first 2 weeks, then at 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. The second consultation before surgery, where your blood results and plan are reviewed, is also included.
Specialist anaesthetist fee
Billed for the operating time plus the pre-operative assessment, as a separate line.
Maitland Private Hospital fee
Theatre time and the day stay, or the overnight bed where one is planned.
Compression garment
Type depends on the area treated.
LED light therapy
Post-operative sessions in the rooms.
GST
Applies to the whole amount.
Not included: your GP referral, pre-operative blood tests, and medication after discharge.
What moves the fee
Number of areas
Each additional area adds operating time, and the surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital fees are all set by that time. Abdomen and flanks in 1 operation is quoted as 1 longer operation, not an abdomen price plus a flanks price. Thighs and the abdomen sit at the longer end; the neck at the shorter end.
Day procedure or overnight
Most liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) is a day procedure. An overnight stay is planned where the operating time or volume is larger, or where you live some distance from Maitland, and adds a hospital charge.
Technique
VASER (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) adds an emulsification step before suction, reflected in the operating time for the area rather than as a device fee.
Skin quality
Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) removes fat and relies on the skin to retract. Where it will not, the right operation is excisional: abdominoplasty, thighplasty, brachioplasty or bra lipectomy, each priced on its own page. That is a candidacy decision made at consultation, not a pricing option.
1 session or staged sessions
Where more than 1 area is treated, the plan is either all areas in 1 operation or the areas split across sessions. The decision is made at consultation on clinical grounds.
I work to a per-session protocol that limits the aspirate volume removed in any 1 operation. Smaller plans fit within 1 session. Larger plans are staged, usually with several months between sessions so the first areas settle before the next is treated. Staging is a planned pathway, not a lesser one.
The cost consequence: the hospital day stay, the anaesthetist’s pre-operative assessment and theatre consumables are incurred once per operation regardless of how many areas are treated. When several areas fit within 1 session, those components appear once. When the same areas are staged, each session carries them again, and the total is usually higher. Which way your plan falls depends on the areas, the volume and your health, and I will tell you at consultation.

Fat grafting (autologous fat transfer)

Fat grafting (autologous fat transfer) takes fat harvested by liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy), processes it, and transfers it to another site. In a quote it appears as additional operating time for processing and transfer, on top of the harvest. The recipient site sets how much.
The most common recipient site in my practice is the breast, priced on its own page in the breast fat grafting lane. The other use is correction of contour irregularities, from earlier liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) elsewhere or from an uneven result of my own, quoted as a component of a liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) operation rather than as a standalone procedure. The fat grafting page explains the harvest and transfer steps.
Lipoedema surgery pricing
Lipoedema surgery uses VASER (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) to remove the diseased fat, but is quoted per session rather than per area, because lipoedema almost always needs more than 1 session. The same per-session aspirate protocol applies, and the lower legs, thighs and arms are treated in a sequence set at consultation. A typical plan runs to 2 or 3 sessions, and some patients need more.
Each session carries the same components as cosmetic liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy): surgeon, specialist anaesthetist, Maitland Private Hospital, garment and follow-up. Sessions are longer with larger volumes, so an overnight stay is planned more often; the hospital has 24-hour cover and an on-site intensive care unit.
There is no Medicare item number for lipoedema liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy), private health funds do not contribute, and GST applies. Where skin excision is needed after the fat has been removed, that is a separate operation priced on the thighplasty or brachioplasty page. The full breakdown is on the lipoedema surgery cost page.
Medicare, private health insurance and GST
Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) performed for cosmetic reasons has no Medicare item number. That has 3 consequences: no Medicare rebate on the surgeon or anaesthetist fee; no private health insurance contribution to the hospital stay, because hospital cover is tied to an item number; and GST on the whole amount. Lipoedema is a medical condition, but there is no item number for liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) to treat it either, so the same position applies.
The 1 situation where the position changes is when liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) is a component of an operation that does carry an item number, such as an abdominoplasty or thighplasty after significant weight loss. The item number belongs to the excisional operation, and whether you meet its criteria is assessed at consultation against the Services Australia requirements. Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) does not become claimable by being added to such an operation, and an operation is never planned around that.
Revision surgery
Contour irregularity after liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) is a recognised outcome, and a small number of patients need a second procedure, either further liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) of a residual area or fat grafting (autologous fat transfer) to a depression. Where I agree at review that revision is indicated, I do not charge a surgeon fee within 12 months of the original operation. The specialist anaesthetist and hospital fees apply again, and are not claimable. Assessment and charging are covered on the revision page.
How to read a liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) quote
Much of the variation between quotes is in what has been left out. Check each of these against every quote you hold:
Anaesthetic
A specialist anaesthetist for a general anaesthetic is a separate fee. A quote without one is using a different approach or has not included it.
Facility
An accredited private hospital costs more than a clinic procedure room. The quote should name it and state whether the stay is included.
Follow-up
How many reviews are included and over what period.
Garment
Included or purchased separately.
GST
Inclusive or exclusive. Every figure on my cost pages states its GST position.
Revision
What it costs if the result needs correcting.
Staging
For a multi-area plan, whether the figure is for 1 operation or the first of several.
The Medical Board’s cosmetic surgery guidelines require all of these in writing before surgery. A quote that meets that standard is the one you can compare like for like.
Cost by treatment area
Each area page carries a worked example built from the components above, with a GST-inclusive total for a stated presentation.
- Abdomen liposuction cost
- Flanks liposuction cost
- Back liposuction cost
- Thighs liposuction cost
- Arms liposuction cost
- Calves and ankles liposuction cost
- Neck liposuction cost
- Lipoedema surgery cost
Getting a written quote

A quote is prepared after consultation, once the areas, the session plan and the day stay or overnight decision are settled. The consultation runs approximately 1 hour; a second consultation to review your plan and blood results is included at no cost, and telehealth is available for the first if you are travelling from outside the Hunter. A GP referral is required before the first appointment.
