Liposuction (Suction Assisted Lipectomy) of the Neck Cost in Newcastle NSW
VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) of the neck costs approximately $11,000 in total at my practice for a typical 1 hour day surgery case at Maitland Private Hospital. That total is not my fee alone. It is made up of 3 separate charges:
- Surgical fee: $4,389 including GST. This is the only part of the total that comes to me. It covers the operation, your consultations, your chin compression garment and every follow-up review through to 12 months.
- Specialist anaesthetist fee: approximately $1,450 including GST. Billed separately by the anaesthetist for the operation plus pre-operative and recovery time.
- Hospital fees: approximately $5,000 including GST. Billed by Maitland Private Hospital for the accredited theatre, day stay and disposables.

The Example Case Behind the Figure
The patient has localised fat above the platysma muscle with good skin tone, which is the presentation that suits liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) of the neck without any skin excision. The operation is VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) under general anaesthetic with a tumescent local anaesthetic, performed as day surgery at Maitland Private Hospital, with no drains and a chin compression garment fitted in theatre. Operating time is 1 hour.

Amounts other than my surgical fee are estimates from the hospital and anaesthetist fee schedules current at the time of writing. They are billed to you directly by Maitland Private Hospital and the anaesthetist, and your written quote carries their current figures. No assistant surgeon, implant or device is involved, so none appears on the quote.
What Changes the Cost
Operating time is the main variable. The anaesthetist and theatre charges are set by the hour, so a neck that takes 45 minutes costs less than the example and one that takes 90 minutes costs more. The amount of fat and whether it sits in one pocket under the chin or extends along the jaw and sides of the neck set the time. I estimate operating time at consultation and the quote is built on it.
I use VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) for the neck rather than standard liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy), and the VASER (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) probe consumables sit within the disposables line.
Skin is the other factor. Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) removes fat only. If your neck skin has lost its recoil, or the platysma muscle bands are visible, removing fat alone leaves loose skin behind, and the appropriate operation is a neck lift (platysmaplasty) or a deep neck lift, both of which are quoted separately and are not priced on this page. I assess your skin and platysma at consultation and tell you plainly which operation your neck needs.
Additional areas move operating time and the fee together. Each further area adds its own operating time and the quote is rebuilt on the combined time, not added as a flat per-area amount. Larger plans are staged across sessions under my staged liposuction protocol, and each session is quoted on its own.
Medicare, Private Health Insurance and GST
Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) of the neck is cosmetic surgery. There is no Medicare item number for it, so there is no Medicare rebate on any part of the cost, and private health insurance does not contribute to the hospital, anaesthetist or surgical fees because there is no item number for the fund to claim against. GST applies to the whole of the total and appears as a separate line on your quote. Revision
A small number of patients need a second procedure to correct a contour irregularity or residual fat once swelling has fully settled, usually after 6 months. Where I agree at review that a revision is indicated, I do not charge a surgical fee for it within 12 months of the original operation. The anaesthetist and hospital fees apply again, and whether any part of those is claimable depends on your insurance position at the time. Your Written Quote
A GP referral is required before your first consultation for any cosmetic surgery. At consultation, which runs approximately 1 hour, I examine your neck, assess the fat, skin and platysma, and confirm whether liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) alone is the right operation or whether skin excision is needed. You then receive a written quote that itemises my surgical fee, the anaesthetist fee and the hospital fees separately, states the deposit and payment dates, and confirms what is included in follow-up. A second consultation is included at no cost, and telehealth is available for regional patients.
