If your breasts have ptotic breasts due to ageing, pregnancy or weight loss, a breast lift (mastopexy) may help.
Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is one of the most requested breast surgical procedures (1). It works by removing the ptotic tissue, reshaping the breasts and repositioning the areolas.
Types of Mastopexy
Dr Bernard Beldholm is skilled in a variety of Mastopexy techniques. He can help you decide what is right for you during your consultation.
- Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Surgery
- Breast Auto-augmentation
- Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Surgery with Breast Implants

Do I need a Mastopexy?
Mastopexy is designed for women who have ptosis due to ageing, massive weight loss or pregnancy. The ideal candidates are healthy non-smokers who are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
You can test yourself to determine whether you might benefit from a breast lift (Mastopexy).
Place a ruler in the fold under your breasts and note the position of your areolas.
- If your nipple and areola fall below the ruler, you may benefit from a Mastopexy.
- If your nipple and areola are on or above the ruler, a Mastopexy probably is not the right procedure. You might consider a breast augmentation if you are concerned about volume loss.

Step 1. Your Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Consultation
There are many options for your surgery, and these will be discussed with you during your consultation. If you are a candidate, Dr Beldholm will recommend an option that is customised for you and your body based on his vast experience, having performed thousands of surgical procedures over the past two decades. He will only suggest a breast lift (Mastopexy) if he determines that it is reasonable for you to have surgery and if he believes the results will match your expectations.
Your appointment with Dr. Beldholm can be scheduled at two convenient locations:
- 30 Belmore Rd, Lorn NSW 2320: a beautiful converted heritage building in the Hunter Valley.
- Virtual consultations on Zoom are also available
Dr Beldholm will take the time to answer all of your questions and concerns during your consultation. Armed with this information, you will be able to make a fully informed decision about whether to have a Mastopexy. If you decide to move forward with the surgery, Dr Beldholm and his team will collaborate with you to design a bespoke treatment plan, schedule a convenient date and location for your surgery and go over pre-operative and post-operative instructions.
It can be quite overwhelming when you consider having surgery, and often it can be hard to remember all the information that we have provided you. We therefore provide you with written information about your procedure as well as an option to come back and have further follow-up consultations with Dr Beldholm at no additional charge.
Preview Your Mastopexy Results with Crisalix 3D Imaging Software
Most women find it difficult to visualise the results of their surgery.
At your consultation, Dr Beldholm can give you an idea of what a Mastopexy can do for you using Crisalix 3D imaging. Not only will this show you the approximate shape and position of your new breasts, it also shows where the scars will be positioned.
Step 2: Mastopexy Operation
Dr Beldholm performs Mastopexy procedures in two private hospitals in the Hunter Valley:
- Maitland Private Hospital
Mastopexy surgery is performed under general anaesthesia in an accredited private hospital, where your care and comfort are the priority.
The extent to which the breasts need lifting and the precise technique used for the procedure will be discussed during your initial consultation and assessment with Dr Beldholm.
Techniques used:
Lollipop mastopexy (vertical breast lift)
The most advanced technique, the vertical Mastopexy elevates the breasts through an incision around the areola and straight down the lower breast pole. 2,3. In the hands of an experienced surgeon, this technique may result in less scarring and better upper pole fullness compared to older techniques. 3,4,5
Doughnut mastopexy (Benelli technique)
A circular or ‘doughnut’ incision is made around the areola. The nipple-areola is moved to a higher position, drawing in the surrounding skin to lift the breast. While the incisions are smaller, this technique is limited in terms of the lift it can provide.
‘Inverted T’ or ‘Wise pattern’ mastopexy
This traditional Mastopexy technique involves an anchor-shaped or ‘inverted T’ incision circling the areola and extending downwards on the lower breast pole, ending with an incision along the lower pole of the breast. Excess skin is removed, and the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. It is more invasive than newer techniques and less commonly used by Dr Beldholm.
Following the lifting process, Dr Beldholm does a symmetry check before closing the incisions in layers with dissolving sutures.
Step 3: Mastopexy Recovery
Every individual heals differently. Generally speaking, most patients can expect:
- Some discomfort for the first few days that varies from patient to patient.
- Ability to lift your arms up above your head within a few days.
- The procedure is a hospital day stay only.
- Most patients only need pain medications such as panadol.
- No drains required.
- You can shower the next day.
- You are provided with 2 compression garments.
- If you have a desk job, then you should be able to go back to work in 3-5 days.
- Full exercise with no restrictions after 4 weeks.
- Significant breast swelling is expected in the first two weeks and usually settles around 4 weeks.
Individual results may vary*
Step 4: Follow-up Care
Your procedure is not considered complete until Dr. Beldholm has met with you to follow up after your operation. He will ensure that the healing process has gone according to plan and that all the expectations discussed in your one-on-one consultation have been met.
You will generally see the doctor on the day after the operation and also in 1 month, 3 months and 6 months following surgery. These appointments are included in the surgical fee.
We have created an extensive program to maximise wound healing and recovery with a course of LED light treatments.

“A mastopexy can reposition your breasts after pregnancy or weight loss. Patients can change the overall proportions and position of the breasts”
