Gynaecomastia surgery (gyno surgery) for BB grade 3, meaning gland excision combined with VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy), starts from about $13,500 in total as a day case for patients without private health cover, and from about $7,500 out of pocket for patients whose health fund covers the operation. These are starting figures for the least complex cases. My surgical fee for this operation is $6,990; the anaesthetist and Maitland Private Hospital bill separately, and your individual quote follows consultation.
This is the most common gynaecomastia operation I perform. BB grade 3 means both fat and a firm breast disc are present on that side of the chest, so both need treating.

What makes up your total cost
For VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) with gland excision on both sides, the total is made up of:
Surgical fee
$6,990, as above.
Anaesthetist’s fee
Billed separately. It is based on the planned surgical time, about 1.5 hours for the least complex cases, plus 1 hour for anaesthetic setup and recovery. Your anaesthetic consultation is by phone in most cases.
Hospital and theatre fees at Maitland Private
Theatre time for 1.5 hours, plus either a day stay or 1 night on the ward. Most patients with health fund cover stay overnight. Patients paying for the hospital themselves usually go home the same day.
Drains
I use a drain on each side as routine for this operation. It comes out through the liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) port, so there is no extra incision, and it is removed once output drops below 20 mL.
Pressure dressing
Applied in theatre and included.
Theatre consumables
Sutures, dressings and disposables are charged by the hospital to patients without fund cover. Insured patients do not see this line.
Each side of the chest is graded on its own. Where one side needs a smaller operation than the other, the quote reflects that.
Medicare and health funds
Medicare item 31526 may apply to this operation where the item criteria are met. Whether you meet them is assessed at consultation, not before, and it cannot be self-assessed. Where the criteria are met and you hold hospital cover at the right level, your health fund contributes to the hospital and theatre fees and to part of the surgeon and anaesthetist fees. How much depends on your policy and your excess.
Where the criteria are not met, the operation is treated as cosmetic. No Medicare or health fund contribution applies, and GST is added to my surgical fee.
