Gynaecomastia Surgery with Crescent Lift (Gyno Surgery) Cost in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley
My surgical fee for gynaecomastia surgery with a crescent lift (gyno surgery) is $6,990. For a patient without private health insurance, the total cost including anaesthetist, theatre and day stay at Maitland Private Hospital starts from $13,500. For an insured patient where Medicare item 31526 applies, the out of pocket cost is around $7,500, including an overnight stay. These are starting figures for the least complex cases. The anaesthetist and the hospital bill separately, and your written quote follows consultation.
This is the operation I use for BB grade 4 gynaecomastia: VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) and/or gland excision, with a crescent of skin removed at the upper edge of the areola to lift the nipple by up to 2 cm.

What my fee includes
The $6,990 surgical fee covers the operation on both sides and everything I do around it:
A second consultation before surgery at no cost
Including review of your blood results. This can be done remotely.
The first 2 weeks after surgery
When I see you 2 to 3 times a week for wound checks, dressing changes and drain removal.
Follow-up reviews
At 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months.

What makes up your total cost
The surgical fee is one part of the total. For a BB grade 4 operation, the components are:
Surgical fee
$6,990, as above.
Anaesthetist’s fee
Billed separately by the anaesthetist. The operation takes around 1.5 hours, and the anaesthetist bills for that time plus an hour, so allow around $1,650.
Hospital and theatre fees at Maitland Private Hospital
Theatre time for around 1.5 hours, plus your stay. Patients without private health insurance go home the same day. Patients with insurance usually stay 1 night, with the hospital fees claimed through the fund.
Drains
Both sides have a drain. It comes out through the VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) port, so there is no extra incision, and it is removed once the output drops below 20 mL. The drain is included in the hospital charge.
Disposables
Sutures, dressings and theatre consumables, around $1,500 for uninsured patients only.
That is how the uninsured total starts from $13,500. A larger lift with the incision extending past the areola takes much the same time and does not change the fee.
Medicare and health funds
Medicare item 31526 (bilateral) or 31525 (unilateral) may apply to a BB grade 4 operation where the item criteria are met. There is no separate Medicare item for the crescent lift, and none is claimed for it. Whether you meet the criteria is assessed at consultation, from examination and clinical photographs.
If an item applies and you hold private health insurance with the right cover, the fund contributes towards the hospital and theatre fees and part of the surgeon and anaesthetist fees. How much depends on your policy and excess. If no item applies, no Medicare or fund contribution is available and GST is added to the surgical fee.
