Breast Augmentation with Mastopexy (Breast Lift) Cost in Newcastle NSW
An augmentation mastopexy (breast lift with implants) can be done as 1 operation, or as 2 separate operations with the mastopexy (breast lift) first and the implants placed some months later. The 2 pathways carry different costs, so it helps to understand the difference before the figures.
Where a patient is suited to it, my preference is a single operation. That means 1 anaesthetic, 1 hospital admission and 1 recovery, rather than going through each of those twice. The trade-off is that a combined operation is longer and a bigger physiological event than either procedure on its own. The implant adds volume and tension while the lift removes skin and repositions the nipple, and that combination can affect nipple blood supply, scar quality and implant position. The chance of needing a later adjustment is also higher than with either operation alone.
Staging is the more appropriate path for some patients, and I plan it that way where a combined operation would place too much demand on the skin and breast tissue. Which pathway suits you is decided at consultation.
Medicare sits inside this decision. Item 45558 for mastopexy (breast lift) cannot be claimed when a prosthesis is inserted in the same operation, so a single-stage augmentation mastopexy (breast lift with implants) is a cosmetic operation with no Medicare or health fund contribution. In practice, a patient whose breast ptosis (low nipple position) and skin laxity meet the 45558 criteria is generally not suited to a single-stage operation in any case, so the staged pathway and the item number tend to go together.
As a single-stage cosmetic operation, my surgical fee for an augmentation mastopexy (breast lift with implants) starts at $15,939 including GST. That is my fee only, and it includes the implants. The anaesthetist and Maitland Private Hospital bill separately and set their own charges. For the least complex case, meaning a normal BMI, no additional procedures, a 4 hour operation as a day stay and no drains, the total is approximately $31,500 including GST. Your individual written quote follows consultation.

My surgical fee
Which covers the mastopexy (breast lift), the breast augmentation (augmentation mammoplasty) and the implants.
The anaesthetist’s fee, billed separately
The anaesthetic consultation is by phone in most cases.
Hospital and theatre fees at Maitland Private Hospital
Charged on operating time and a day stay for this operation. An overnight stay, if planned, is charged by the hospital.
Drains
Drains are not usually needed for this operation.
Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy)
For contouring, or fat grafting alongside the implants, adds operating time and changes the quote.
A staged pathway is quoted as 2 separate operations
each with its own surgical, anaesthetist and hospital fees.

Medicare and health funds
A single-stage augmentation mastopexy (breast lift with implants) has no Medicare item number, so no Medicare or health fund contribution applies. 10% GST applies to the surgical, anaesthetist and hospital fees, and the hospital charges a higher rate for cosmetic theatre time.
Item 45558 is relevant only to a staged pathway, as explained above. Eligibility is assessed at consultation, and any health fund contribution depends on your policy.
Revision surgery, if ever needed, is charged depending on your insurance position; this is covered in the full breast surgery cost guide.

Your next step

A GP referral is required before a consultation. Consultations are held at my rooms in Lorn, Maitland. For patients travelling from regional NSW, the first consultation can be by telehealth, with an in-person examination before surgery is booked.
