Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants) Cost in Newcastle NSW
Breast augmentation (breast implants) is a cosmetic operation. No Medicare item number applies to cosmetic breast augmentation, so there is no Medicare or health fund contribution, and 10% GST applies to every part of the cost.
My surgical fee for breast augmentation (breast implants) starts at $6,050 including GST. That is my fee only. The anaesthetist and Maitland Private Hospital bill separately and set their own charges, and the implants are a separate cost component. For the least complex case, which means a normal BMI, round smooth silicone implants, a day stay, and no additional procedure, the total is approximately $15,000 including GST. Implant shape and brand, and any added procedure, change the quote. You receive an individual written quote after your consultation. Where an item number applies after assessment, the position changes; see below.

The implants themselves, the anaesthetist’s fee and the hospital fees are not part of my fee. The next section sets out how they add up.

The anaesthetist’s fee
The anaesthetist bills you separately and sets their own fee. Your pre-operative anaesthetic consultation is by phone in most cases, with examination on the day of surgery.
Maitland Private Hospital fees for theatre time and your day stay
The hospital charges a higher rate for cosmetic theatre time because no Medicare item applies.
The implants
These appear on my written quote as a separate line from my surgical fee. Round smooth silicone implants are the least complex case. Anatomical (teardrop) implants cost more per pair, and the brand you and I select at consultation also changes this component.
Drains are not used routinely for breast augmentation (breast implants)
So there is no drain-related charge in the least complex case.
Some surgical plans change the quote because they add operating time or a further procedure. Examples are a mastopexy (breast lift) performed with the implants, fat grafting alongside the implants, and liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) of the donor area for that fat. Whether any of these is appropriate for you is decided at consultation, and each is quoted separately.
Medicare and health funds
Cosmetic breast augmentation (breast implants) has no Medicare item number. Item 45524 exists for augmentation in specific medical circumstances and is assessed at consultation; it does not apply to the least complex case on this page. Where no item applies, Medicare and your health fund contribute nothing, and GST applies to the surgical, anaesthetist and hospital fees. If an item does apply, your health fund contribution depends on your policy.
Implants are not lifetime devices, and any future surgery to remove or replace them carries its own cost. Revision surgery, if ever needed, is charged depending on your insurance position; this is covered in the full breast surgery cost guide.
