The cost of gynaecomastia surgery (gyno surgery) depends on the operation, and the operation follows the BB grade I assign to each breast at consultation. Each of the 5 BB grades maps to 1 operation, with its own theatre time, hospital stay, drain use and Medicare position. For that reason there is a separate cost page for each grade. BB grade 1
Gland excision only, through a small incision at the lower edge of the areola, as a day procedure. BB grade 1 gland excision cost.
BB grade 2
Chest VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) only, with no gland excision. This is the cosmetic pathway, with no Medicare item. BB grade 2 chest liposuction cost.
BB grade 3
Gland excision with VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy). The most common operation I perform for gynaecomastia. BB grade 3 gynaecomastia surgery cost.
BB grade 4
VASER liposuction (ultrasound assisted lipectomy) and/or gland excision with a crescent lift of the nipple. BB grade 4 crescent lift cost.
BB grade 5
Mastectomy with free nipple-areola graft, for the largest breasts with loose skin. BB grade 5 mastectomy with free nipple-areola graft cost.
Which BB grade applies to you
The grade is assigned per breast, and the 2 sides often differ. Where they do, the quote follows the operation planned for each side. Medicare and health funds
Medicare items 31525 and 31526 may apply to gland excision where the item criteria are met, and eligibility is assessed at consultation. Liposuction (suction assisted lipectomy) on its own has no Medicare item. Your next step
A GP referral is needed before consultation. Consultations are held at my rooms in Lorn, with telehealth available for regional patients. After consultation, my patient coordinator prepares a written quote for your operation, with the applicable item numbers, my surgical fee and an estimate of the anaesthetist’s fee, which you can take to your health fund.
