Dr Bernard Beldholm

With the face being the most prominent, unique, and expressive areas of your body, the aging process can be particularly hard to come to terms with.

Individuals who come to us with sagging and wrinkled facial skin and a permanent ‘tired’ looking appearance are sometimes low on self-confidence too.

The loss of collagen from the skin and the harmful effects of the sun and smoking can be partially reversed with a long-lasting procedure that reduces wrinkles and sagging, and restores a natural-looking, more youthful appearance.

A face and neck lift uses advanced techniques to improve the appearance of the jaw, chin and cheek areas of the face, as well as the neck. If you are looking to reduce wrinkles and restore elasticity to the skin in a natural-looking way, you will usually benefit from this procedure.

Dermal fillers, muscle relaxants and skin treatments

In the last 5 years there has been significant advances in modern aesthetic treatments.

  • New skin treatments can improve your skin significantly and to some extent reverse sun damage.
  • Muscle relaxants treat smile lines, frown and forehead line.
  • Dermal fillers treat volume loss.
  • Doctor only cosmeceutical products help rejuvenate the skin and improve skin quality.

Dr Beldholm performs a liquid facelift that is an alternative to a mini-facelift.

If you are having regular treatments at our Clinic and having your fillers performed by an advanced injector, such as Dr Beldholm, then most likely you will not need to consider a facelift until to are in your 50’s. You will also find that if you do end up having a facelift, then the results you obtain will be significantly improved by combining your facelift with our range of modern aesthetic treatments.

When should you consider a facelift and what procedure should you have?

A facelift restores a more pleasing contour to the face and neck. It can be performed alone, or in conjunction with other procedures, such as a forehead lift or eyelid surgery. Facelifts have been successfully performed on patients as young as 40 and as old as 80.

The days of waiting until 60 for a one-off facelift have gone.

The most important consideration for you is that you are having proven anti-ageing treatments from your late 30’s into your 40’s and 50’s.

There’s now a growing trend for people in their late 30s and early 40s to actively seek to have a non surgical solution to their saggy skin. In the past a mini facelift was the only option to give a significant result. However, the trend now is to have a liquid facelift instead.

In this age group, the skin starts to give way to gravity — the brow may droop a little and the skin around the eyes loosen.

Muscle and ligament tone is still quite elastic and patients usually require less extensive rejuvenating techniques. Dermal fillers are able to replace the lost volume and lift saggy skin, this leads to tightening of the underlying muscle and ligament tissue.

The jowls and neck area can also be tightened non surgically, and the non- surgical brow lift, using muscle relaxants and dermal fillers, is used to elevate the corners of the eyes and tighten the upper cheek area.
There is now even fat melting injections that can deal with the double chin.

The new dermal filler techniques focus on lifting and replacing volume in key positions on the face. If done my a skilled injector the results are very natural. Many patients come to us and are worried that the dermal fillers will make them look “fake” or “done” as they have seen on celebrities on TV that have not had good results, or friends that have not had the appropriate technique performed when having dermal fillers. If performed correctly however, the liquid facelift will make you look completely natural and rejuvenated, no one will be able to tell that you have been “done”. The liquid facelift is a walk in walk out procedure, performed in the Clinic, with minimal downtown.

A facelift is now more likely to be needed in your 50’s. If you are committed to staying youthful, look after your skin by not smoking or taking drugs, and by avoiding excessive sun exposure.

Patients in their 40s

Within this group, ageing tends to be primarily facial, with possible early jowling and slight neck laxity. Nasolabial lines and Marionette lines start appearing. There may also be some excess neck fat.

My standard advice 5 years ago was that you needed a mini-facelift to deal with these changes. The results achieved from this operation where very good, and there was a high satisfaction rate.

However, with new dermal filler products and new dermal filler techniques I’m now able to provide my dermal filler patients with results that are the same or better than they would have had from a mini-facelift. For many of my patients the liquid facelift has now replaced the mini-facelift.

Liquid facelift

  • Walk in walk out of clinic with minimal to no downtime.
  • Usually requires 14-18 ml of filler. This can be performed in one session or over several sessions. If performed over several sessions, then usually we use 4 ml of filler each session, 1-3 months apart.
  • Your result will last 2-3 years.
  • Maintenance treatments once a year, with 1-4 ml of filler, can maintain the results long term.
  • There are some risks however these are minimal compared to a facelift.
  • Double chin can now be treated with a fat melting injection in-office.
  • Instant results!

Patients in their 50s

This is the new 40!

If you have been having dermal fillers and skin treatments then a facelift is usually considered in your 50’s.

Moderate jowls and more excess neck skin may be obvious in this age group, along with possible excess neck fat and a drooping chin.

A facelift is usually required to deal with these changes, a neck lift can improve a loose neck and improve the jawline.

The incision for the facelift will extend behind as well as in front of the ear. More skin is elevated and the underlying tissues may require resectioning and elevation.

The recovery period can be from two to four weeks.

Patients in their 60s and onwards

Most signs of ageing are usually present in this group, including significant jowls, deep lines and bands, excess eyelid skin, potentially dropped eyebrows, significant neck skin laxity, dropped chin, and lack of mid-cheek fullness. In some cases, Dr Beldholm may recommend a skin resurfacing procedure along with a full facelift for a more harmonious, refreshed result.

The full facelift is usually combined with eyelid surgery and a brow lifting procedure.

The incision is made behind and in front of the ear, extending into the hair line. As the procedure is quite extensive, full recovery generally takes around four week.

Some special cases that a facelift may be beneficial in

The Rhytidectomy and Neck lift after weight loss

Not only can you lose volume in the face, resulting in loose skin, after shedding your old body, this can also happen on your neck too. You might have noticed there is a lot of excess skin in your neck area, and it makes you look 20 years older than others your age. If you want to know how to fix saggy skin in the neck region, then the neck lift is it.

Neck liposuction with a neck lift and facelift for “turkey neck” or excessive fullness in the neck area

A neck lift is the solution to your difficult problem – alternative therapies such as beauty creams, straight neck liposuction, or even “neck yoga” are simply not going to do the job. Sometimes combined with a face lift, neck lift surgery is generally the only answer when it comes to your neck. This surgery will remove the excess skin and fat causing the wobble, and firm up the entire area, transporting your neck region to a younger version of you.
