This page has been created to inform you of some very important changes that have taken place in our industry. Specifically regarding the recent development with Breast Implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA- ALCL) and the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) response.
BIA-ALCL is a rare cancer of the immune system. It is not breast cancer; which forms from cells in the breast but instead a cancer that grows in the fluid and scar tissue that forms around a breast implant. High risk implants linked to this cancer are biocell Allergan and Polyurethane Silimed. Dr Beldholm has used polyurethane textured implants in the past. These implants have been suspended, pending a final decision from the TGA. There is a small percentage that has been linked to ALCL. The TGA is not recommending women without symptoms have breast implants removed or undergo regular screening.
Things to look out for are lumps or abnormal swelling of one or both breasts, generally between 6-10 years after implants have been inserted. If you notice anything that concerns you, please make an appointment to see Dr Beldholm. A GP referral is required for this consultation.
Our clinic participates in data collection with the Australian breast device registry. This is a commonwealth government initiative established to monitor the safety and quality of procedures involving implantable breast devices.
The TGA is constantly updating their website with the latest information, please visit the below link for further information.
