Significant weight loss, genetics, loss of skin elasticity, etc. can all contribute to the changes in the thigh area. A thigh lift may be considered for patients with loose, sagging skin around the inner thighs.
Inner thighplasty, or inner thigh lift surgery, is a procedure that reshapes the inner thighs by reducing excess skin and, in some cases, fat. The goal is to tighten the skin and improve the contours of the thighs so they appear more proportional and cause less discomfort.

Who is an inner thigh lift for?
Patients who are typically suited for an inner thigh lift are those who have lost a significant amount of weight and are left with extra, loose skin on the thighs. Their skin elasticity is also minimal to non-existent. The most appropriate candidates for this surgery are also those who’ve committed themselves to a healthy lifestyle and have maintained a stable weight.
The procedure may not be suitable for people who are:
- Smokers
- Prone to bleeding or have poor healing ability
- Struggling to have realistic expectations
- Considered high risk due to medical conditions (Ex: Cancer, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, etc.)
How is an inner thigh lift done?
Inner thigh lift surgery generally takes three to four hours to perform. The time frame will ultimately vary from patient to patient. During the operation and while the patient is under general anesthesia, Dr Beldholm will make an incision on the inner thighs. The exact placement and length of the incision varies based on the extent of excess skin and fat.
After those initial incisions, he will measure, mark, and remove the excess skin to reshape and tighten the inner thigh area. He may also perform VASER liposuction to reduce fat deposits and define the legs. VASER is advantageous over standard liposuction since studies show it may reduce bleeding and bruising. (2,3)
Near the end of the procedure, Dr Beldholm will apply sutures to close the incisions. The patient will then be bandaged and required to wear a compression garment for several weeks to minimise swelling (4) and support the tissues as they heal.
What are the benefits of an inner thigh lift?
For patients seeking inner thigh lift surgery, many will experience the following benefits:
- Firmer thighs
- A reduction in chafing
- Thighs that are more defined and contoured
What is the recovery like for an inner thigh lift?
Following surgery, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home, and they should also help you around your home for the first few days. This is because you will likely feel tired and sore for a few days after the operation. Dr Beldholm can prescribe medication to cope with any pain or discomfort.
Expect to take at least one week off from work to rest. In some cases, patients may need to take three. Patients will also need to avoid any heavy lifting, vigorous exercises and strenuous sports until advised otherwise by Dr Beldholm.
Most of the swelling and discolouration experienced from the procedure will usually go away after one to two months. After 6 to 12 months, the scars should start to fade to a fine, thin line, (1) although everyone heals differently and the appearance of the final scar can vary.
It takes approximately a year to appreciate the full results of a thigh lift, although patients typically begin to notice early improvements within the first few weeks to months.
During follow-up visits, Dr Beldholm and his staff will monitor your progress to ensure that your body is healing properly.
